July 2007
By: Nicole Nelson
With some of the most unique, challenging, and aesthetic golf in the Las Vegas area, Rio Secco has a reputation and standard of excellence that is widely known. Its location adjacent to the Butch Harmon School of Golf gives Rio Secco a hint of star-quality while still being accessible to even the most humble of golfers. Great views of the Las Vegas Strip, high-quality golf, amazing service, the newly renovated restaurant, and the new T-Mate program all combine to make this a must-play golf course in Las Vegas. Rio Secco is ideal for groups of any size. Call us and book today for a golf experience you won't soon forget!
In August of 2006, the facility received some renovation in the restaurant area of the clubhouse. Around the same time, GPS was added on the golf carts. Another recent addition is the T-Mate program. You now have the option to reserve a T-Mate who serves as your golf hostess/caddie during your round. Your T-Mate does everything from greeting you when you arrive and ordering your lunch to raking the bunkers and maintaining the scorecard.
Rio Secco is designed by world-renowned designer Rees Jones. His ability to use the natural topography and build around it is evident in the design and layout at this first-class golf course. The course winds through and around the natural canyons and desert landscape. There are six holes that go through a desert wash, six holes that have a background of the city, and six holes that go through a canyon. "The canyon holes are very, very unique," says Rio Secco's Marketing Director Charles Fahy. "I don't think there's anything here in Las Vegas, and not too many courses around the country where you get such a dramatic canyon experience with views of the Las Vegas Strip."
Hole number 16, the signature hole at Rio Secco, is quite dramatic. There is a sixty-foot canyon wall behind the green. There is an elevated approach to this green and the wall behind can make it quite an intimidating and amazing hole.
There may be just one official signature hole, but if you ask Fahy, "really, we have eighteen signature holes." He continues, "Most memorable for me is the 11th hole. It's my favorite. When you're teeing off you see the city in the background. It's a dogleg right with an elevated tee, and it's just a very picturesque hole. It's our second toughest hole on the golf course. The green has a good slope to it and it's a risk-reward golf hole. You can hit a fairway wood off the tee and just have a long approach to the green. Or you can try to cut the corner and have a better long angle into the green, but you might put yourself in the rocks as well. Rees Jones-designed golf courses are very much risk-reward, and you’re really going to see that here at Rio Secco. You can play it safe or you can try to be risky, and it’s a trade-off. That's what golf is about, you know, the decisions you make out there and how well you execute the shots."
Another claim to fame for Rio Secco is the fact that the course record of 64 is held by none other than Tiger Woods. He visits once a year for Tiger Jam - a fund raising event held in Las Vegas that includes a concert on the Las Vegas Strip and a private golf event held at Rio Secco. In addition, the close proximity of Butch Harmon's Golf School adds an element of prestige to the already-prominent Rio Secco. "He's here just about every day unless he's on tour with one of his players," comments Fahy. "That's part of the experience out here. You never know who you're going to see eating lunch in the clubhouse."
Rio Secco was built in 1997 and measures in at close to 7400 yards. Dazzle your family, friends, and clients at this fantastic course. Call today to make your reservation.
